Here is something rarely encountered, a true Iolite cat's eye.  It is simply a phenomenon that is uncommon in the species, so we were pleasantly surprised recently to see a larger example from the finds of Orissa, India.  The eye is quite respectable for the species - it's a moderate eye, but quite nicely it is not caused by any distracting or even noticeable inclusions - its all completely microscopic.  Strongly pleochroic, the stone varies in color from very slightly bluish-gray to a nice violet depending on the viewing angle.  Very large example of this phenomenon for Iolite.
