Tanzanite
Color: Medium Purplish-Violet
Clarity: Eye Clean
Origin: Tanzania
Cut: Pear
Treatments: Heat
Measurements: 9.5 x 6.4 mm
Perfectly clean and with a precision cut, a lovely gem Tanzanite in a shade we find somewhat different and attractive. The color is more violet dominant with a secondary purple and is lighter in tone without giving up even a tiny bit of saturation. Gorgeous stone with unassailable cutting and a fine, useable size.

Long overdue attention is now being paid to the so-called ‘fancy Tanzanites,’ or more correctly, Zoisites of a different color. The range is quite broad with yellows, greens, pinks and scales of all the above. From a recent selection this one caught our eye - a very successful gem with a fine mix of colors - this is not the very low end heated greenish-purples that are often encountered but a fine unheated stone with a subtle and unique mix that imparts a teal appearance. We saw a few of these offered in a second parcel at ridiculous prices, but what the dealer did have correct is their rarity - we almost never see this particular hue. Great cutting and clean, a one-off we happened to find.

A fascinating little gem for those interested in the interplay between cutting rough and finished gems. This stone was cut from a little fragment of rough so that it features the actual crystal face of the Tanzanite rough as the table of the finished stone. The pavilion is completely faceted, as in the outline and girdle; the table is so lustrous that you really don’t notice unless you see it in reflected light. Great conversation piece!

A beguiling unheated gem in an unusual and intense orange hue that is strongly highlighted with purplish-pink; always a rare color with unheated Zoisite. Great cutting, a fine polish and entirely clean. Not at all a common color for these unheated stones, quite interesting and rare as such.

We have always enjoyed these ‘fancy’ Tanzanites, or more correctly, Zoisites. We are consistently on the lookout for fine greens and pinks, but this one is special. Not only is the primary bodycolor a fine medium tone orange, the stone is exceptionally dichroic face-up with the most wonderful shade of pink being the modifier. The orientation of the rough has produced a stone that combines two of the rarest color for this species into one superb stone. One very well hidden and thin veil. Exceptionally rare to see these over 1 carat.

Another truly odd piece. While it is not unheard of to see some chatoyancy in Zoisite, strong and mobile eyes that cover the entire surface of the stone are rare. Doubly so when the stone has the traditional color of Tanzanite. Particularly nice, we count this one among the best examples we have handled. Really fine bodycolor for one of these.
