Traditional Kornerupine is not one of the first gems to come to mind when speaking of beautiful stones. The colors seem to stray into brownish hues or overdark tones. In fact, it has been a number of years since we offered what we would consider to be an excellent example of this traditional type. So, it is not without some pleasure that we happened upon this lovely gem. Deeply colored in golds and yellows, the color is considerably less ‘muddy’ than most. Give a gem like this a fine US precision cut and you can really unlock some of the beauty of this species. We have seen a few fine Malagasy ones, but this one is Sri Lankan - it is rather nice to think of such a good one coming from this traditional source. Lovely luster and somewhat unexpected.

Origin: Tanzania
Cut: Sugarloaf Cabochon

Measurements: 9.1 x 7.8 mm
This variety of Kornerupine became available a decade ago with very little production since - and this is a new and outstanding way to appreciate the uniqueness of this material. The highlight is the dynamic pleocroism of the material - a bright blue-green is one direction and a fantastic lilac hue in the other; both can be quite saturated in larger size stone. The sheer size of this cab allows for a stunning display of these colors, something that is sometimes lost in smaller faceted gems which are the norm. Great shape and gorgeous color, an endlessly fascinating cab with a superb color and undeniably gemmy quality.
