Faceted Cassiterite has always been an appealing member of the collector class of gemstones.  It is a tin mineral that is rare in gem quality, but when cut is quite impressive - it has both a high refractive index and an adamantine luster.  This stone is a lovely example of this scarce material - many of these can be quite dark, so the overall pleasant light color deserves special mention.  The size is also very nice - large, but not a 50+ ct. stone that can be difficult to place in a collection.  What really attracted us to this particular stone is the fascinating pattern of color zoning.  A twinning plane runs diagonally through the stone from the the top right and forms the junction for thin color bands to take a dramatic turn.  You get this wonderful angled color banding right under the table of the gem - a better orientation simply couldn't be asked for.  Very unique - it will certainly be quite awhile before we see anything like this one again!
