One of the most unusual and attractive colors we have seen in gem Tourmaline in a good long time. From an old collection and labeled simply as from 'Madgascar', this stone has a quite stunning and highly unusual saturated red-orange bodycolor. Best described as a kind of 'cranberry' color, in some lights it is not unlike some orangish-red Rhodochrosites - quite odd for Tourmaline. Given the locale and the once or twice we have seen specimens approach this color, we would not be at all surprised if this stone, with advanced testing, proved to be the Liddicoatite variety of Tourmaline. Like some of the finest of the Rubellite variety, it is not entirely clean, but the cutting is very well done and it is a large example so it has quite a presence. A definite rarity.
