We have always liked the iridescent Andradite Garnet that is found in a few spots worldwide - Japan, Mexico and New Mexico to name a few. These are highly individual stones (a complex growth pattern produces the very-close-to-the surface effect) and is unusual to come across a crystal which has both a broad enough face and the correct orientation to do something extraordinary like this. The multi-color iridescent flash in this stone has been captured and channeled into a true chatoyancy by the cutter.
It is somewhat extraordinary what we are seeing here. Cat’s Eye Garnet of any variety is quite scarce, but a multi-color eye? Something that is nearly unheard of in the gem world. Truly a fascinating and special piece, the eye is even complete and rolls nicely in classic fashion. How this was accomplished without cutting away the color is most likely a feat of sheer luck. We have sold many examples of iridescent Andradite over the years and have never seen a stone that could have produced this complete effect. Of interest to both connoisseurs of Garnet and also those looking for spectacular examples of unusual chatoyancy.
