Hibonite is an interesting story; as a mineral it is know from various locales (Malagasy specimens are black and opaque!), but no one seems to have anticipated the occurrence of gem crystals of this species. About 10 years ago such an occurrence happened in Mogok, but there has an exceptionally small amount of higher quality material found. When we offer these, they are generally 1/4 ct. in size - a fine stone in excess of 1/2 carat is exceptionally rare. Yes, there are some light inclusions, but no fractures or surface reaching problems on this gem of nearly 2 carats. Moreover, the color is an attractive medium brown and the gem is very well cut with a fine overall gemmy character that is quite appealing. All told, one of the best larger examples we have seen of this species. Always a treasure for the collector.
